The Hanoverian is a warmblood breed; warmbloods are a mixture of light and heavy horses. It is one of the oldest and most numerous warmbloods. Its history dates back to the 17th century, when Spanish, Oriental and Neapolitan stallions were imported to Germany. They were bred to local mares, possibly with an early warhorse pedigree, and it was here that they developed the Holsteiner.
